Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgery that sucks out fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction is not a low-effort alternative to controlling weight through diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have accurate expectations about what the technique can do for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have areas of extra fat in certain areas. He or she will be physically healthy, psychologically stable and understanding in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be in as good a shape as possible at the time of the technique and to have not have smoked for a number of months.

Your age is not a major consideration; however, older patients may have lowered skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a youthful patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The technique begins with a pre-operative consultation with the doctor where you are given specific instructions about how to get ready for the surgery.

Although liposuction is usually a very low risk technique it is vital that you follow the instructions very carefully as slight variations can lead to serious complications.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing height. In some instances photos will be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photos. Local anesthetic is pumped and the patient is given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.

An antibiotic should be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is typically removed via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are tiny, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent procedure involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent surgery offers many benefits over traditional liposuction techniques.

If many sites are being worked on, your physician will move on to the next areas, trying to keep the incisions as unnoticeable as realistic.

The patient will feel only a scraping or rasping feeling from the cannula probing. Frequently the patient will get up, walk around, and go home the same day unless they received general anesthesia, although someone else will need to drive.

A compression garment or bandage must be worn for two to four weeks. If non-absorbable stitches are used, they will be taken out after 5 to 10 days. Depending on the amount of liposuction, clients are generally able to resume work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction carries stronger risk for individuals with medical risks such as diabetes, pronounced heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or those who have recently had surgical procedures near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons fees for liposuction are typically between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The fee is higher for larger body areas. The normal cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and drugs can raise the total. In addition the fees are generally higher in some major urban areas.

Ask your doctor to find the exact cost until finally making your decision. There are options for paying the costs over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You will always have a consultation with your doctor before agreeing to any surgery. Be sure you take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. Also you will probably ask to see before and after photographs to get a better understanding of what is possible.

Some questions you may ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired results?
  • Where will the technique be done and how much time will it take?
  • What is the healing time for doing various activities?
  • What is the total this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had performing this procedure?
  • How often do complications happen?
  • What if I am not satisfied with the outcome?

Be sure the doctor has all your medical history and understands any allergies or special needs you have.
