Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgery that vacuums fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction should not be considered a cheap alternative to controlling weight through diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have realistic expectations about what the technique can do for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have areas of excess fat in localized areas. He or she will be physically healthy, psychologically sound and realistic in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be as fit as possible at the time of the procedure and to have not have smoked for a number of months.

Your age is not significant consideration; however, older clients may have lowered skin elasticity and may not obtain the same results as a youthful patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The technique begins with a pre-operative meeting with the surgeon where you are given specific instructions about how to get ready for the surgery.

Although liposuction is generally a very low risk technique it is important that you follow the instructions very carefully as slight differences can cause serious problems.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing height. In some instances images will be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photos. Local anesthetic is injected and the patient is given a sedative, either orally, or using an IV injection.

An antibiotic should be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is typically removed via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are tiny, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent procedure involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent surgery offers many advantages over traditional liposuction surgeries.

If many sites are being treated, your physician will move on to the next areas, trying to keep the incisions as unnoticeable as realistic.

The patient will feel only a scraping or rasping sensation from the cannula movement. Frequently the patient can get up, walk around, and go home on the same day if they did not receive general anesthesia, although they'll need someone else to drive.

A compression garment or bandage is worn for 2 to 4 weeks. If non-absorbable stitches are placed, they can be taken out after five to ten days. Depending on the extent of the liposuction, clients are generally able to return to work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction carries stronger risk for individuals with medical problems including diabetes, significant heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or those who have recently had surgical procedures near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons fees for liposuction are normally between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The cost is higher for bigger body areas. The normal cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and medications can significantly increase the total. In addition the fees are often higher in some large cities.

Check with your surgeon to find the precise cost until finally making your choice. There are options for paying the fees over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You will normally have a meeting with your surgeon before agreeing to any kind of surgery. You want to take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. Also you may ask to view before and after photographs to get a better understanding of what is possible.

Some questions you should ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired results?
  • Where will the technique be performed and how long will it take?
  • What is the healing time for doing various activities?
  • What is the total this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had with this technique?
  • How often do complications occur?
  • What if I am not satisfied with the results?

Check that the doctor has all your medical history and knows of any allergies or special needs you have.
