Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgical technique that sucks out fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction is not a cheap alternative to exercise and diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have realistic expectations about what the surgery can do for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of extra fat in certain areas. He or she should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and understanding in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be in as good a shape as possible before the procedure and to have given up smoking for several months.

Your age is not a major consideration; however, older clients often have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same outcome as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The procedure starts with a pre-operative consultation with the doctor when you are provided with careful instructions about how to get ready for the surgery.

Although liposuction is generally a very low risk procedure it is vital that you follow the instructions exactly as slight variations can lead to serious problems.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing height.Sometimes photos will be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photos. Local anesthetic is pumped and the patient is given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.

An antibiotic should be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is usually sucked out via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are small, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent technique involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent procedure offers many advantages over traditional liposuction techniques.

If a large number of sites are being worked on, your surgeon will move on to the next areas, working to keep the cuts as inconspicuous as possible.

The patient will feel only a scraping or scratching feeling from the cannula probing. Usually the patient will get up, walk around, and go home on the same day unless they received general anesthesia, although they'll need someone else to drive.

A compression garment or bandage is worn for a month. If non-absorbable stitches are placed, they will be removed after 5 to 10 days. Depending on the amount of liposuction, patients are generally able to resume work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction has greater risk for individuals with medical problems such as diabetes, pronounced heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or those who have recently had surgical techniques near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons fees for liposuction are typically between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The fee is higher for larger body areas. The average cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Additional fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and medications can significantly raise the total. In addition the fees are usually higher in some large urban areas.

Ask your doctor to learn the precise cost until finally making your choice. There are options for financing the costs over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You should always have a consultation with your doctor before agreeing to any surgery. Be sure you take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. In addition you may ask to view before and after images to get a better understanding of what is probable.

Some questions you may ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired outcome?
  • Where will the technique be performed and how much time will it take?
  • What is the healing time for doing various activities?
  • What is the amount this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had performing this procedure?
  • How often do problems happen?
  • What if I am not happy with the outcome?

Make sure the surgeon has all your medical history and knows of any allergies or special needs you have.
