Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that sucks out fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction is not a low-effort alternative to controlling weight through diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have accurate expectations about what the procedure can do for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in localized areas. He or she should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be as fit as possible before the procedure and to have not have smoked for a number of months.

Your age is not significant consideration; but note, older clients often have lowered skin elasticity and may not obtain the same outcome as a youthful patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The technique starts with a pre-operative consultation with the doctor where you are given specific instructions about how to prepare for the technique.

Although liposuction is usually a very low risk technique it is vital that you follow the instructions very carefully as slight variations can lead to serious complications.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing position.Sometimes photographs will be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photos. Local anesthetic is pumped and the patient may be given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.

An antibiotic should be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is normally sucked out via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are small, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent technique involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent surgery offers a long list of advantages over traditional liposuction procedures.

If many sites are being worked on, your surgeon will move on to the next areas, working to keep the cuts as inconspicuous as realistic.

The patient will feel only a scraping or scratching sensation from the cannula probing. Frequently the patient can get up, walk, and go home on the same day unless they received general anesthesia, although they'll need someone else to drive.

A compression garment or bandage is worn for a month. If non-absorbable stitches are placed, they will be taken out after 5 to 10 days. Depending on the extent of the liposuction, patients are generally able to return to work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction has stronger risk for patients with medical problems such as diabetes, significant heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or people who have recently had surgery near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons fees for liposuction are typically between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The cost is more for larger body areas. The average cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Additional fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and drugs can increase the total. Also the fees are generally higher in some major cities.

Check with your doctor to find the exact cost before making your choice. There are options for paying the costs over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You should always have a consultation with your surgeon before agreeing to any surgery. You want to take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. In addition you should ask to view before and after images to get a better idea of what is possible.

Some questions you will probably ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired outcome?
  • Where will the surgery be performed and how long will it take?
  • What is the recovery time for doing various activities?
  • What is the total this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had with this procedure?
  • How often do complications happen?
  • What if I am not happy with the outcome?

Make sure the surgeon has your complete medical history and knows of any allergies or special needs you have.
