Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgery that vacuums fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction is not a cheap alternative to controlling weight through diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have clear expectations about what the procedure can accomplish for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are average-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have areas of excess fat in certain areas. He or she will be physically healthy, psychologically sound and understanding in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be in as good a shape as possible at the time of the procedure and to have given up smoking for many months.

Your age is not significant consideration; however, older patients often have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same outcome as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The procedure starts with a pre-operative meeting with the doctor where you are given careful instructions about how to prepare for the surgery.

Even though liposuction is generally a very low risk procedure it is vital that you follow the instructions very carefully as slight variations can cause serious complications.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing position.Sometimes images should be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after images. Local anesthetic is injected and the patient could be given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.

An antibiotic will be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is normally sucked out via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are tiny, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent procedure involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent technique offers a long list of benefits over traditional liposuction techniques.

If a large number of sites are being treated, your surgeon will move on to the next areas, working to keep the cuts as inconspicuous as realistic.

The patient will feel only a scraping or rasping feeling from the cannula probing. Frequently the patient will get up, walk, and go home on the same day if they did not receive general anesthesia, although someone else will need to drive.

A compression garment or bandage must be worn for two to four weeks. If non-absorbable sutures are placed, they will be removed after 5 to 10 days. Depending on the amount of liposuction, patients are commonly able to return to work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction has stronger risk for individuals with medical complications such as diabetes, significant heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or people who have recently had surgical procedures near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons costs for liposuction are normally between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The fee is more for bigger body areas. The average cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Additional fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and medications can increase the total. Also the fees are often higher in some major urban areas.

Ask your doctor to learn the exact cost until finally making your choice. There are options for paying the fees over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You should normally have a consultation with your surgeon before agreeing to any kind of surgery. You want to take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. In addition you will probably ask to view before and after images to get a better idea of what is possible.

Some questions you may ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired outcome?
  • Where will the surgery be performed and how much time will it take?
  • What is the healing time for doing various activities?
  • What is the total this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had with this technique?
  • How often do problems occur?
  • What if I am not satisfied with the outcome?

Make sure the doctor has all your medical history and understands any allergies or special needs you have.
