BOTOX© At A Glance

The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name Botox©, is a popular non-surgical treatment that for a while decreases or eliminates frown wrinkles, forehead creases, crows feet by the eyes and thick bands in the neck.

BOTOX© Cosmetic is approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in patients ages 18-65.

In 2000, it was approved for the treatment of cervical dystonia (a disorder that causes extreme neck and shoulder contractions).

As an unusual side effect of the eye disorder treatment, physicians observed that Botox reduced the frown wrinkles between the eyebrows.

In April 2002, the FDA was satisfied by its review of studies indicating that Botox reduced the severity of frown lines for up to 120 days and approved the drug.

BOTOX© Reasons & Benefits

In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women surveyed reported the improvement in the appearance of frown wrinkles between their brows as moderate to good one month after being treated. Results can last for up to 4 months, and can vary between individuals.

BOTOX© Surgery Procedure

The procedure starts with a pre-operative consultation with the doctor where you are given careful instructions about how to get ready for the technique.

Your doctor will administer a number of tiny injections of BOTOX© directly into the muscles are responsible for those moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. No anesthesia is necessary, although your surgeon may decide to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting.

The location, size, and use of the muscles that make a furrowed brow vary markedly among patients. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while resulting in the skin a smoother, more refreshed attractiveness.

You will probably notice an obvious improvement in the moderate to severe frown wrinkles between your brows within days. If you do not continue procedures, the frown lines between your brows will gradually look like they did before treatment.

Before having the technique done, the patient will be prepared to realize that BOTOX© does not actually erase lines but relaxes them. What this means is that more pronounced wrinkles will become somewhat less deep and small wrinkles will virtually disappear. But BOTOX© Plastic will not radically improve your facial smoothness.

It is surprising to see how many people do not remember how they appeared before the technique and are amazed at the difference when shown a photograph.

You can expect to be in and out of the physician's a staff without downtime. You can then go directly back to your normal activities.

Risks And Complications Of BOTOX©

Botox© has been widely used for more than eleven years with over 1 million people.

Over the past 20 years, Botulinum Toxin Type A has been evaluated in more than two hundred trials. There are no documented systemic risks linked to Botox© injections. Serious heart risks and serious allergic reactions have been reported rarely.

If you feel you are having an allergic reaction or other unusual symptoms, including difficulty swallowing, talking or breathing, call your surgeon immediately.

BOTOX© Costs

Surgeons costs for BOTOX© are usually between $10 and $20 per injection. The number of injections varies from patient to patient. Additional fees for the operating room can raise the total. In addition the fees are often more in some large urban areas.

Check with your doctor to learn the exact cost before making your choice. There are options for financing the fees over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You will always have a meeting with your doctor at the time of agreeing to any procedure. You want to take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. In addition you may ask to view before and after photographs to get a more pleasant idea of what is possible.

When it comes to selecting a physician-administered aesthetic treatment, chances are you'll want proof, not just claims. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery makes these suggestions: Ask questions and be informed about the benefits and risks involved in the technique.

Some questions you may ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired outcome?
  • Where will the technique be done and how long will it take?
  • What is the healing time for doing many general activities?
  • What is the total this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had with this procedure?
  • How often do complications occur?
  • What if I am not happy with the outcome?

Check that the doctor has all your medical history and understands any allergies or special needs you have.
