Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that vacuums fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction should not be considered a cheap alternative to exercise and diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have realistic expectations about what the procedure can accomplish for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have areas of excess fat in certain areas. He or she will be physically healthy, psychologically stable and understanding in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be as fit as possible at the time of the technique and to have given up smoking for a number of months.

Your age is not significant consideration; however, older clients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same outcome as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The technique starts with a pre-operative meeting with the doctor where you are provided with specific instructions about how to get ready for the surgery.

Although liposuction is usually a very low risk procedure it is important that you follow the instructions exactly as slight variations can cause serious problems.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing height.Sometimes photos will be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photographs. Local anesthetic is pumped and the patient is given a sedative, either orally, or using an IV injection.

An antibiotic will be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is typically removed via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are tiny, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent procedure involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent procedure offers a long list of benefits over previous liposuction surgeries.

If many sites are being treated, your surgeon will move on to the next areas, trying to keep the cuts as inconspicuous as realistic.

The patient will feel only a scraping or rasping feeling from the cannula probing. Frequently the patient can get up, walk around, and go home on the same day unless they received general anesthesia, although someone else will need to drive.

A compression garment or bandage is worn for two to four weeks. If non-absorbable sutures are placed, they will be removed after 5 to 10 days. Depending on the amount of liposuction, patients are generally able to resume work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction carries greater risk for patients with medical complications such as diabetes, pronounced heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or those who have recently had surgical techniques near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons costs for liposuction are usually between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The fee is higher for bigger body areas. The average cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and drugs can significantly raise the total. In addition the fees are often higher in some major urban areas.

Check with your surgeon to learn the exact cost before making your choice. There are options for financing the costs over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You will always have a consultation with your surgeon before agreeing to any kind of procedure. Be sure you take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. In addition you should ask to see before and after photos to get a better understanding of what is possible.

Some questions you may ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired outcome?
  • Where will the procedure be done and how much time will it take?
  • What is the healing time for doing various activities?
  • What is the total this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had performing this technique?
  • How often do complications occur?
  • What if I am not happy with the outcome?

Make sure the doctor has all your medical history and knows of any allergies or special needs you have.
