Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgical technique that sucks out fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction should not be considered a low-effort alternative to exercise and diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have accurate expectations about what the technique can accomplish for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. He or she should be physically healthy, psychologically sound and realistic in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be in as good a shape as possible before the procedure and to have given up smoking for several months.

Your age is not significant consideration; however, older clients often have lowered skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The procedure starts with a pre-operative consultation with the surgeon when you are provided with specific instructions about how to prepare for the surgery.

Even though liposuction is generally a very low risk technique it is vital that you follow the instructions exactly as minor variations can cause serious problems.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing position. In some instances photographs will be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after images. Local anesthetic is injected and the patient is given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.

An antibiotic will be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is usually sucked out via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are tiny, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent procedure involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent technique offers a long list of advantages over traditional liposuction techniques.

If a large number of sites are being worked on, your physician will move on to the next areas, trying to keep the cuts as unnoticeable as possible.

The patient will feel only a scraping or rasping sensation from the cannula probing. Usually the patient will get up, walk, and go home on the same day if they did not receive general anesthesia, although they'll need someone else to drive.

A compression garment or bandage must be worn for two to four weeks. If non-absorbable stitches are used, they will be removed after five to ten days. Depending on the amount of liposuction, patients are usually able to return to work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction carries stronger risk for patients with medical complications such as diabetes, significant heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or people who have recently had surgery near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons fees for liposuction are typically between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The fee is higher for bigger body areas. The average cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and drugs can increase the total. In addition the fees are often higher in some large cities.

Ask your surgeon to learn the precise cost before making your choice. There are options for paying the costs over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You will always have a meeting with your doctor before agreeing to any surgery. Be sure you take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. In addition you should ask to see before and after photographs to get a better idea of what is probable.

Some questions you will probably ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired outcome?
  • Where will the procedure be done and how much time will it take?
  • What is the healing time for doing various activities?
  • What is the total this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had performing this technique?
  • How often do complications occur?
  • What if I am not satisfied with the outcome?

Make sure the surgeon has all your medical history and knows of any allergies or special needs you have.
