Liposuction
Liposuction At A Glance
Liposuction is a surgery that vacuums fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction should not be considered a low-effort alternative to exercise and diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have accurate expectations about what the technique can do for you.
Liposuction Reasons & Benefits
The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of extra fat in localized areas. He or she should be physically healthy, psychologically sound and realistic in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be as fit as possible at the time of the surgery and to have given up smoking for several months.
Your age is not a major consideration; however, older clients often have lowered skin elasticity and may not achieve the same outcome as a younger patient with tighter skin.
Liposuction Surgery Procedure
The technique starts with a pre-operative consultation with the doctor where you are provided with specific instructions about how to get ready for the procedure.
Although liposuction is generally a very low risk procedure it is important that you follow the instructions very carefully as slight variations can cause serious problems.
The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing position. In some instances photos should be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photos. Local anesthetic is pumped and the patient could be given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.
An antibiotic will be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is typically sucked out via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are tiny, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent technique involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent procedure offers a long list of advantages over previous liposuction techniques.
If a large number of sites are being worked on, your physician will move on to the next areas, trying to keep the cuts as inconspicuous as realistic.
The patient will feel only a scraping or scratching feeling from the cannula probing. Frequently the patient will get up, walk, and go home the same day unless they received general anesthesia, although they'll need someone else to drive.
A compression garment or bandage is worn for a month. If non-absorbable stitches are used, they can be taken out after 5 to 10 days. Depending on the extent of the liposuction, clients are commonly able to return to work or school after two days to two weeks.
Risks And Complications Of Liposuction
Liposuction has stronger risk for individuals with medical risks including diabetes, pronounced heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or those who have recently had surgical procedures near the area to be contoured.
Liposuction Costs
Surgeons costs for liposuction are usually between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The fee is more for larger body areas. The expected cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and medications can significantly increase the total. Also the fees are often higher in some major urban areas.
Ask your doctor to learn the precise cost before making your decision. There are options for paying the fees over time.
Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon
You should normally have a consultation with your surgeon before agreeing to any procedure. You want to take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. In addition you should ask to see before and after photos to get a better understanding of what is probable.
Some questions you will probably ask include:
- Am I being realistic about my desired results?
- Where will the technique be done and how long will it take?
- What is the healing time for doing various activities?
- What is the amount this will cost me?
- How much experience have you had performing this technique?
- How often do complications happen?
- What if I am not satisfied with the results?
Be sure the surgeon has your complete medical history and knows of any allergies or special needs you have.
