Liposuction
Liposuction At A Glance
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that vacuums fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction should not be considered a cheap alternative to exercise and diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have accurate expectations about what the procedure can do for you.
Liposuction Reasons & Benefits
The best candidates for liposuction are average-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of extra fat in certain areas. He or she should be physically healthy, psychologically sound and understanding in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be in as good a shape as possible at the time of the surgery and to have given up smoking for several months.
Your age is not significant consideration; however, older patients may have lowered skin elasticity and may not obtain the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin.
Liposuction Surgery Procedure
The technique starts with a pre-operative consultation with the surgeon where you are given careful instructions about how to prepare for the technique.
Even though liposuction is generally a very low risk technique it is important that you follow the instructions exactly as slight variations can cause serious problems.
The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing position. In some instances photos will be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photos. Local anesthetic is pumped and the patient is given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.
An antibiotic will be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is normally removed via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are tiny, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent technique involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent procedure offers many benefits over previous liposuction techniques.
If many sites are being treated, your surgeon will move on to the next areas, working to keep the incisions as unnoticeable as possible.
The patient will feel only a scraping or scratching feeling from the cannula probing. Frequently the patient will get up, walk around, and go home the same day unless they received general anesthesia, although they'll need someone else to drive.
A compression garment or bandage is worn for two to four weeks. If non-absorbable stitches are placed, they can be removed after five to ten days. Depending on the extent of the liposuction, clients are commonly able to resume work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction
Liposuction carries stronger risk for patients with medical problems such as diabetes, significant heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or people who have recently had surgical procedures near the area to be contoured.
Liposuction Costs
Surgeons fees for liposuction are normally between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The cost is more for larger body areas. The normal cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and medications can raise the total. In addition the fees are usually higher in some major urban areas.
Check with your doctor to find the exact cost before making your decision. There are options for paying the costs over time.
Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon
You should always have a meeting with your doctor before agreeing to any surgery. You want to take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. Also you may ask to see before and after images to get a better understanding of what is possible.
Some questions you will probably ask include:
- Am I being realistic about my desired results?
- Where will the surgery be performed and how much time will it take?
- What is the healing time for doing various activities?
- What is the total this will cost me?
- How much experience have you had performing this procedure?
- How often do problems happen?
- What if I am not happy with the results?
Be sure the doctor has all your medical history and knows of any allergies or special needs you have.
