Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgery that vacuums fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction is not a cheap alternative to controlling weight through diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have accurate expectations about what the procedure can accomplish for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of extra fat in localized areas. He or she should be physically healthy, psychologically sound and realistic in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be as fit as possible before the technique and to have not have smoked for many months.

Your age is not a major consideration; but note, older clients often have lowered skin elasticity and may not obtain the same outcome as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The technique starts with a pre-operative consultation with the doctor when you are given careful instructions about how to prepare for the surgery.

Although liposuction is usually a very low risk procedure it is vital that you follow the instructions exactly as slight differences can lead to serious problems.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing position. In some instances images should be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photos. Local anesthetic is pumped and the patient is given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.

An antibiotic should be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is typically sucked out via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are small, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent procedure involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent procedure offers many benefits over previous liposuction procedures.

If a large number of sites are being worked on, your surgeon will move on to the next areas, trying to keep the cuts as unnoticeable as possible.

The patient will feel only a scraping or scratching feeling from the cannula movement. Usually the patient can get up, walk, and go home on the same day unless they received general anesthesia, although someone else will need to drive.

A compression garment or bandage must be worn for a month. If non-absorbable stitches are used, they can be taken out after five to ten days. Depending on the extent of the liposuction, clients are generally able to resume work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction has stronger risk for individuals with medical problems such as diabetes, significant heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or people who have recently had surgery near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons fees for liposuction are typically between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The fee is more for larger body areas. The average cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and drugs can increase the total. In addition the fees are generally higher in some major cities.

Check with your surgeon to find the exact cost until finally making your decision. There are options for paying the fees over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You will always have a consultation with your surgeon before agreeing to any surgery. Be sure you take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. Also you should ask to see before and after photographs to get a better idea of what is probable.

Some questions you will probably ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired outcome?
  • Where will the surgery be performed and how much time will it take?
  • What is the healing time for doing various activities?
  • What is the amount this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had performing this technique?
  • How often do problems occur?
  • What if I am not satisfied with the results?

Check that the doctor has all your medical history and understands any allergies or special needs you have.
