Liposuction At A Glance

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that vacuums fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction should not be considered a cheap alternative to exercise and diet. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have clear expectations about what the surgery can do for you.

Liposuction Reasons & Benefits

The best candidates for liposuction are average-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in localized areas. He or she should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in their expectations. It is ideal for the patient to be as fit as possible at the time of the surgery and to have given up smoking for a number of months.

Your age is not significant consideration; however, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same outcome as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction Surgery Procedure

The technique begins with a pre-operative meeting with the doctor where you are given careful instructions about how to prepare for the technique.

Although liposuction is usually a very low risk technique it is vital that you follow the instructions exactly as slight differences can lead to serious complications.

The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing height.Sometimes photographs should be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photographs. Local anesthetic is pumped and the patient could be given a sedative, either orally, or through an IV injection.

An antibiotic should be given either shortly before, or right after. The fat is normally removed via a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). Incisions are tiny, about a quarter to a third of an inch. The tumescent technique involves injecting fluids and anesthetic under the skin. The tumescent procedure offers many advantages over traditional liposuction procedures.

If many sites are being treated, your physician will move on to the next areas, trying to keep the incisions as inconspicuous as possible.

The patient will feel only a scraping or rasping sensation from the cannula probing. Frequently the patient can get up, walk, and go home on the same day unless they received general anesthesia, although someone else will need to drive.

A compression garment or bandage is worn for 2 to 4 weeks. If non-absorbable stitches are used, they can be removed after 5 to 10 days. Depending on the amount of liposuction, patients are usually able to resume work or school after two days to two weeks.

Risks And Complications Of Liposuction

Liposuction has stronger risk for individuals with medical problems including diabetes, pronounced heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or those who have recently had surgical techniques near the area to be contoured.

Liposuction Costs

Surgeons fees for liposuction are typically between $600 to $1,200, depending on difficulty, for a small area. The cost is higher for bigger body areas. The normal cost for the abdomen is $4,000 to $8,000, but for the outer thigh is about half as expensive. Additional fees for the operating room, anesthesiologist and drugs can significantly increase the total. Also the fees are generally higher in some large cities.

Ask your doctor to learn the precise cost before making your decision. There are options for paying the costs over time.

Questions To Ask Your Liposuction Surgeon

You will normally have a consultation with your surgeon before agreeing to any kind of surgery. Be sure you take sufficient time to get all your questions answered. In addition you will probably ask to view before and after photos to get a better understanding of what is probable.

Some questions you will probably ask include:

  • Am I being realistic about my desired outcome?
  • Where will the procedure be performed and how long will it take?
  • What is the recovery time for doing various activities?
  • What is the amount this will cost me?
  • How much experience have you had performing this procedure?
  • How often do complications happen?
  • What if I am not satisfied with the outcome?

Be sure the doctor has all your medical history and knows of any allergies or special needs you have.
